Fatconomy, a pop-up takeaway installation within the Design Museum, London. Showcasing the research investigation and design intent of material innovation from the waste stream of fats and oils across London. The waste system designed by Johnson, reveals the material possibilities of converting waste fats and oils into bio-leathers and other material-based aggregates. The tiled wall illustrates the eclectic mix of cuisines stamped with their current postcode and waste code. Adjacent to this ‘fat map’ the screening of ‘Of Material & Labour’, animates the narrative of the fat waste system, through a speculative documentary, it tells the story of how fat mining can create a localized network building the base for a self-aware, biomaterial economy.
